The CHEMPACK Project

A Nor-Cal EMS Webcast Continuing Education Series

Two (2) FREE Continuing Education Units are available to California EMS personnel for watching this video.

"The CHEMPACK Project"

"The CHEMPACK Project" is a webcast presented by Dr. Lou Lallo, PharmD, MBA, and Dave Lemay, CalFire Chief (ret). It was recorded live February 27, 2016 at the Willows City Hall in Willows, California by Patti Garrison. The webcast was developed and provided partially with grant funds from the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP).

Terrorist attacks against the United States have become a reality in today's world. Emergency incidents that involve the release of chemical nerve agents or organophosphate pesticides are a likely scenario. Quickly debilitating and often lethal, these compounds require rapid intervention by first responders and hospital staff to reverse the multiple effects that result from exposure. Caches of pre-packaged antidotes known as "CHEMPACK" have been placed at strategic locations in our state for rapid deployment to such an emergency.

This training program has been developed to provide valuable information regarding the recognition of nerve agent and organophosphate exposure, and the people and processes involved in the activation and deployment of a CHEMPACK cache. First Responder personnel are encouraged to view this training.

The objectives of this webcast are to:

  • Provide an overview of the CHEMPACK Project at the federal, state and local level;
  • Discuss the clinical need for the medications in the CHEMPACK containers.
  • Review the logistical roles and responsibilities for deploying CHEMPACK in the counties of Region III.

After watching this video, you will be able to:

  • Describe the CHEMPACK Program;
  • Determine which situations require CHEMPACK assets;
  • Understand how to request a CHEMPACK;
  • Learn about CHEMPACK deployment options.
